“Every block of stone/wood/clay has a statue or relief carving inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it” — Michelangelo

As a wood and clay sculptor, I look for inspiration all around me, it is everywhere when you become aware. Nature, art, people, history, and love all influence my work. What I try to capture most in my sculptures is movement and light. These elusive qualities can transform a figure or a relief in just a matter of moments. I strive to convey that sense of place by capturing its fleeting magic.

To bring life to a relief or dynamic three-dimensional form remains exciting and fresh to me. One of my recent works, in particular, references the expressive quality of wind through drapery and the chaotic beauty of fluid/flow dynamics.

My work may be found in private collections, churches, and many institutions.

I trained with German (Bavarian) master carver Ludwig Kieninger for over 10 years and became well-versed in multiple traditional styles. Now with over 25 years of experience, I routinely sculpt in multiple styles in both wood and clay. Custom woodcarving and sculpting done by hand and in the traditional European style are my specialty. My original carvings make beautiful additions to private residences, churches, and institutions. Besides carving unique wood statues, I also create one-of-a-kind, custom-designed ornamental,  decorative, and architectural carvings and often carve replicas of missing or damaged wooden parts of antique furniture and fireplace mantels. Almost all of my carvings are done by hand with chisels and gouges using traditional methods. I love doing original, custom woodcarvings for individuals, families, churches, and organizations.

Doug pictured with Ludwig

This picture was taken in 2005 with Ludwig when he was in his 70s. We'd been working together for 6 years and every minute of it changed my life. I’m forever inspired by his passion for the craft and his willingness to teach and pass on his wisdom.

“The richness I achieve comes from nature, the source of my inspiration.” — Claude Monet
